On the morning of September 11, 2001 I was doing what many liberals do: I was asleep, with no intention of rising any earlier than 10:00am because I was in the midst of being oppressed by "the man." In liberal-speak, this means that I was unemployed with no intention of finding a job anytime soon.
My live-in girlfriend, Joyce, woke me with the news that a plane had just flown into a skyscraper in New York City. This alert was interesting enough to rouse me from my bed, and I made it downstairs to stand bleary-eyed in front of the TV just in time to see the second plane slam into the other tower.
For a moment I thought I was seeing a replay of the first plane, but the awful reality soon penetrated the fog of my early-morning stupor: The other tower was already aflame, so this was.... this was a second plane... which meant.......
"New York is Under Attack" I shouted to Joyce as she prepared to leave for work.
"No it's not," she responded from the kitchen, in her typical desire to deny anything upsetting, preferring instead to insulate herself in normalcy. "It's an accident."
Normally keen to debate anything, I didn't rise to the challenge or bother to point out the fallacy of her position, but simply said, "I don't think so."
After a few more moments of watching the carnage unfold, and as the horrible reality began to sink in, I said aloud to myself, "Thank God George Bush is President."
Just hours previous, such a comment from my lips would have been unthinkable. Blasphemous. But at that moment I recognized at the gut level that Al Gore, had he won the election, would have responded impotently to this attack, as had his predecessor to other attacks, and that President Bush would rain relentless war and death upon those who would dare do such a thing.
Thus began the process of the scales falling from my eyes. The gradual opening of my mind to objective reality - unobscured by the subjective filter liberal ideology.
